Cornell
Competition 2000 -- April 1st
reported by Candice Chan
For those of you who couldn't make it, you missed a
fabulous event and here's what happened:
Cornell finally hosted a comp! After a whole year of
"are we going to be able to have a comp" to the last few weeks of
"argh we need judges !!!" the comp was put together and run very smoothly
-- GREAT JOB people! Special thanks to the executive committee especially nick
who put in so much time and effort! I think everyone had an exceptionally good
time.
The competition had about 100 odd competitors -- not
a bad turn out. Cornell entered about 25 competitors and I'm proud to say that 8
of those were first-timers -- I think some of them are hooked (evil grin).
RESULTS:
In the ***NEWCOMER*** category,
congratulations to all our newcomers. They all did exceptionally well with a lot
of them getting into the finals (and after only a semester or less of dancing --
we're so proud!)
- Dan and Kim (#27) came 5th in am waltz,
6th in am tango, 7th in swing, 6th in intl chacha, and 7th in intl rumba --
you guys looked great!
- Sidney and Ellan (#29) came 6th in am
waltz, 6th in am foxtrot, 4th in am TANGO (following in the footsteps of
other great dancers? :) 7th in am chacha, 5th in swing and 5th in intl rumba
- Marc (that swiss lady killer :) danced
with TWO followers, Hsin May and Si Wei. I am unsure which dances he danced
with which followers (pls e-mail me so I know!) but the results were 7th in
am waltz, 7th in am foxtrot, 4th in intl waltz (WOW) , 2nd quickstep (double
WOW) and 6th in swing.
- Mario and Alice (#34) did not compete in a
whole lot of dances but they had fun right? and placed 4th in intl waltz --
good job!
The ***BEGINNER*** category (always the
largest category) was fun and exciting. We got some people who are great dancers
but who are NEVER around to finally compete with the team like Matt Steven,
Angelica, Zoltan and Melissa -- thanks for coming, it was great to see you
all.
- Zoltan and Melissa (#26) did really well,
getting callbacks to am waltz, foxtrot, am chacha, jive, back-2-back waltz
and am/intl rumba, and placing 5th in intl waltz!
- Bernd and Heather (#31) at their SECOND
comp managed to get callbacks in AW, AF, AT, AC, IC, IJ and balloon tango.
- Wendy and Laurie (#23) were our girl power
couple! They really heated up the competition getting a callback for IR
& took home ribbons placing 7th in AC, 5th in AR& 7th in IC -- move
those hips ladies!
- Josh and Candice (#35) (I always find it weird
talking in the 3rd person) had a great time at the competition despite
Candice having a nervous breakdown from registration/competition stress and
having 4 rounds of jive! They took home 13 ribbons (one of every colour!)
placing 6th in IQ, back-2-back W, & swing; 5th in IC, IR; 4th in IT, AW
& balloon tango; 3rd in IW and jive; 2nd in AR and 1st in tango (YAY!).
They would like to say a big thank you to everyone that day for their
support and kind remarks -- you guys are awesome!
(My goodness did you make it this far?)
The ***INTERMEDIATE*** category sported 3 of
our "veteran" couples:
- Nick and Wendy (#33) -- definitely crowd
pleasers! They did great (for people who were considering not even entering
the comp) taking 5th in am W/T and 4th in intl F/T. They also did a smashing
job in the fun dances coming 4th in back-2-back waltz and 3rd in balloon
tango -- after daring partner and balloon switches with Josh and Candice!
Nick also came 3rd in JJ Hustle with that small asian girl Candice adores!
- Hubert and Petra (#30) -- our favourite
COUPLE couple! placed 5th Am F/V, 7th in Am F/T and 7th intl W/Q. They were
wonderful with helping out on the day of the comp as well - what a team!
- Markus (that tall guy) and Ning really
worked hard for this comp and it paid off! They managed to win ribbons in I
W/Q (6th) and I F/T (6th)!
At this stage in the e-mail I'm glad we DON't have
any advanced couples:) Wait, I'm not quite done yet.
I'd just like to thank the academy ... there are too
many people to name ... my mum and dad...
Okay okay really on behalf of the CBDC committee
THANK YOU to everyone who participated, helped us and gave us your support at
this event -- we really appreciate it! ***Special recognition*** to those who
didn't get a chance to compete -- HOLLY, LINDA, ANIA, ANDREW -- we couldn't have
done it without you!
Looking forward to next year's competition! CORNELL 2001!
